Thai youth and Electronic cigarette use: a socioecological study

Tobacco-attributed morbidity and mortality have raised public concern worldwide, and there has been a reduction in the global prevalence of tobacco use, from 22.7% to 17.5% over the past 15 years. However, new forms and products from tobacco companies, such as electronic nicotine delivery systems commonly known as “e-cigarettes”, have presented significant challenges to public health experts worldwide. Seeherunwong et al. (2023) conducted an institution-based cross-sectional study, and their research focused on cigarette use distribution, pattern of e-cigarette use and socioecological model (SEM) factors associated with e-cigarette use among Thai youth aged 15-24. An internet based self-administered questionnaire was developed based on SEM. Out of the 12767 respondents, prevalence of cigarette was 4.3%, e-cigarette was 3.5% and dual use of both products was 2.4%. Interestingly, e-cigarette users tend to express more positive beliefs towards e-cigarettes than non-users. Although e-cigarettes are illegal in Thailand, 66% of users acquired these products from online markets and 4% from grocery stores. Having a girlfriend or boyfriend who uses e-cigarettes increased the likelihood of e-cigarette use by 3.239 times. Higher odds of e-cigarette use among the users was associated with peer use of these products than sibling use. Exposure to e-cigarette use in school increased the odds of e-cigarette use by four times. To prevent the increasing incidence of e-cigarette use, health literacy programs related to e-cigarettes, including media and information literacy, should be launched across all levels of the educational environments to enlist youth to stand against the negative impacts of e-cigarette use. Government should provide innovative online health risk communication campaigns to counteract misinformation that e-cigarettes are harmless. These efforts will not only strengthen Thailand’s existing e-cigarette regulations but also serve as an effective alternative to banning online marketing and sales of e-cigarettes.

Knowledge Contribution to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
By Mr. Wichukorn Suriyawongpaisal and; AIHD Research Support team
What is SDGs?

In late 2000s, the global community recognized the significance of societal and environmental well-being as well as international engagement to solve global crises such as poverty and food security which were well pronounced in Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). In addition, the MDGs was also criticized by UN member states for being ‘top down’ goals since the high-income countries had more influence in deciding the goals and relevant indicators. As a result, the UN convened with its member states to come up with new goals that could be more holistic and inclusive. As a result, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which consisted of 17 overarching goals addressing multi-dimensional issues in development, were conceived.Since the conception of SDGs, academia and researchers have conducted research to unpack solutions to achieve each goal according to their expertise. ASEAN Institute for Health Development, as an academic institute that focuses on knowledge generation and transfer for primary health care improvement, contributed its efforts to SDG 3 achievement. Some of research outputs related to SDG are presented as follows.

Research Highlights

Below is a list of research articles related to SDG targets 3.2, 3.4, and 3A. For the target 3.2, most of the studies were pooled from multi-national data to determine the newborn-related prevalence and mortality risks. In target 3.4, recent articles from multi-national country studies and a binational country study underline NCDs including mental health related risk factors with a focus on the context of COVID-19 pandemic.Last but not least, research articles on the application on Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) also highlight emerging evidence of e-cigarette, which remains a concerning public health issue for robust interventions to address new vapers and comprehensive policy and regulations
