Editor’s Note

Welcome to the first volume of the AIHD Bulletin published by the ASEAN Institute for Health Development (AIHD), Mahidol University. This volume offers AIHD works both in education and research. We also give an update on the interesting activities and news about AIHD. I believe that this bulletin will be a new channel to communicate and share many useful facts and information with everyone.

AIHD Mission

Education

The ASEAN Institute for Health Development (AIHD) was founded in 1982 as a Training Center for Primary Health Care Development with the help of the Japanese government. It was later recognized as one of Mahidol University’s faculties. AIHD aims to become the ASEAN region’s foremost academic institute in Global Health, Health Policy, and Primary Health Care (PHC).The ASEAN Institute for Health Development (AIHD) develops and assists graduate students’ professional careers. Our programs foster an innovative and engaging learning environment by staying current and focusing on how evolving trends affect primary health care, public health practitioners, and health and sustainable development. Furthermore, AIHD aspires to develop skilled public health leaders, managers, and researchers in health policy and primary health care.

1.Doctor of Philosophy Program in Health and Sustainable Development (International Program)

The Health and Sustainable Development Doctoral program educates the next generation of global public health researchers to undertake cutting-edge research on global health and development concerns, eliminate disparities, and promote the planet’s sustainable future. The Ph.D. program prepares students to identify, evaluate, and apply scientific theories and research methodologies; conduct original scientific research studies in resource-constrained settings; apply research findings to best practice and strategic planning for global health programs; and teach, mentor, and advise students, programs, development officials, and governments. Students will learn and understand key theories, interdisciplinary and mixed-method research methodologies, cultural competency, and research ethics

2.Master of Primary Health Care Management (International Program)

Master of Primary Health Care Management (International Program) trains graduates to prevent disease and promote health by addressing underlying environmental factors and social determinants, with the ultimate goal of achieving health equity among populations. The program helps those who want to work in public health settings and those who are already working in the field and want to advance their knowledge. Graduates are prepared for leadership positions that develop evidence-based transdisciplinary approaches for crucial public health challenges that integrate classroom learning, academic research, interprofessional partnerships, and community participation. Students learn how to assess scientific data and use it to enhance the health of various groups and communities. Graduates will have the knowledge, skills, and values necessary for jobs in public health in a wide range of contexts.

Master of Primary Health Care Management Special track in Social Health Protection (International Program)

Master of Primary Health Care Management Special track in Social Health Protection (SHP) is an innovative program that aims to develop critical analysis of issues related to social health protection to enable students to acquire the necessary skills to support relevant health financing policy reforms and devise appropriate health benefit package designs with the support from the International Labour Organisation (ILO) through the Luxembourg-funded Project: ‘Support to the extension of Social Health Protection in South-East Asia.

3. Master of Arts Program in Addiction Studies (Thai Program)

The MAAS program, recognized by the MU council in 2004, is Thailand’s and the Asia-Pacific region’s first certified graduate degree program in addiction studies. The addiction studies program will help the students gain information, skills, and capacities to recognize addiction in all aspects as a disease and comprehend prevention and treatment options for people of various ages and cultural backgrounds. It is a one-of-a-kind program that examines similar policy patterns worldwide, epidemiology of substance-related morbidity and mortality, and evidence-based treatment and preventive methods.

Research AIHD: What We Do?

ASEAN Institute for Health Development (AIHD) takes into account the aspects of primary health care as described in the Astana Declaration 2018. Those aspects are 1) multi-sectoral policy and actions, 2) public health functions and services, and 3) people/community empowerment. Expected outcomes include, but are not limited to, policy improvement, promoting equal access to primary health care services, and strengthening the health system.

Our researchers

AIHD researchers are keen on assessing health status across different areas and evaluating public policy. Some of our researchers share experiences in policy development and implementation with government organizations and civil societies.

Special Mission

ASEAN University Network – Health Promotion Network (AUN–HPN), one of the important thematic networks of the ASEAN University Network, is working towards promoting the role of the university as a leader in health promotion in society. AUN-HPN was established in 2014, with ASEAN Institute for Health Development, Mahidol University currently serving as the Secretariat of the network. There are 30 core members and 8 associate members of universities from within and outside ASEAN region. AUN-HPN aspires to be a common platform for ASEAN higher education institutions to collaborate with key stakeholders, build capacity for health promotion and develop innovative solutions to common health challenges in the ASEAN region.

AIHD Updates

AIHD signed MOU

The ASEAN Institute for Health Development (AIHD), Mahidol University has collaborated in education and research with the Graduate School of Public Health, Teikyo University, Japan, on 15 February 2022. This signing ceremony was honored by Prof. Banchong Mahaisavariya, M.D.; President of Mahidol University and Prof. Dr. Yoshiharu Fukuda; Dean of Graduate School of Public Health, Teikyo University, together with Assoc. Prof. Dr. Phudit Tejativaddhana, M.D.; Director of AIHD and Prof. Dr. Yoshinori Nakata, Director of Global Office, Teikyo University as witnesses. Through this MoU, the two institutions will foster collaboration of academics, research projects, and the exchange of academics, supporting staff, and students at the international level.

The 13th IGSCPP on 8th July 2022

The IGSCPP was a collaborative endeavor by three academic institutions, The ASEAN Institute of Health Development (AIHD), Mahidol University, the Institute for Population and Social Research (IPSR), Mahidol University, and the College of Public Health Sciences (CPHS), Chulalongkorn University.The conference aimed to promote cooperative academic activities, provide graduate students, faculties, and researchers with opportunities for developing and presenting academic paper and research at a national and international conference, enhance the quality of research in Population and Public Health in order to reach international standards, and disseminate graduate students research among research communities to benefit the public at both national and international levels.
