21 July 2021

On 21 July 2021, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Phudit Tejativaddhana, M.D.; Director of ASEAN Institute for Health Development #AIHD, Mahidol University joined the Co-creation workshop on healthy ageing and the role of life-course immunisation for Thailand held by The EU-ASEAN Business Council, KPMG and Sanofi that was sponsored by The Western Pacific Pharmaceutical Forum (WPPF).
During the meeting, a report on the healthy ageing behavior of society was presented, addressing the issue of gaining immunity in a long life. In Thailand, 20% of influenza vaccines are given to people over 65 years old, the highest among ASEAN countries. Singapore has a 14% vaccination rate for people over 65 years old, Indonesia 1% and Vietnam 1%, but is lower than the standards of World Health Organization. However, the developed countries such as South Korea (83%), the UK (75%) and the Republic of Taiwan (45%) have largely struggled with vaccine access and lack of funding.
During the meeting, members suggested developing access to vaccination programs in the community by cooperating with sectors, increasing motivation for vaccination access, using social media for spreading vaccine information, enhancing public trust by communicating the benefits of vaccination, developing the roles of local administrative organizations in health promotion and disease prevention, etc.
